Pre-Conference Field Trip
Field Trip 1: “Kaiserstuhlvulkanismus”2 Days -> 17.09. – 18.09.21 back between 16:00 – 18:00 hMeeting point: KIT AGW (Institute for Applied Geosciences, Adenauerring 20a, 76131 Karlsruhe)Guides: Dr. Elisabeth Eiche; Dr. Benjamin Walter Max. number of participants: 14Price per participant: € 12517.–18.09.21 Overnight stay at Landgasthof Löwen 17.09.21: wine tasting18.09.21: individual departure from Freiburg main station or departure to KIT between 4-6pm -> arrival at KIT between 6-8pm The Kaiserstuhl volcanic complex is located about 120 km southwest of Karlsruhe. Within a few km, various rare alkaline igneous rocks can be studied, which were formed intrusive, effusive or explosive. These include carbonatite, foid-bearing monzogabbro, tephrite and phonolite. Many historic quarries allow insights into the subvolcanic centre of a stratovolcano. During our field trip, we will talk about the latest findings on the formation of the Kaiserstuhl and its structure and explore the relevance of local ore deposits. Today, glacial loess deposits mainly cover the Kaiserstuhl volcano. The geology and special location in the Upper Rhine Graben determine that the Kaiserstuhl both is home to rare animal and plant species and particularly suitable for viticulture. These aspects will also be covered during the field trip. The connection between rocks and wine will be a further aspect, which we will explore during a wine tasting at the end of the first day. Please note:• Bring with you: Terrain appropriate clothing & footwear, hammer, magnifying glass, water bottle (can become very hot); something to eat for the 1th day.• Additional costs for wine tasting including food.• Take care – it’s a tick area
Post-Conference Field Trips
Field Trip 2: “Schwarzwald / Black Forest” (cancelled)Field Trip 3: “Wutachschlucht and Donau-Aach” (cancelled)2 Days: 24.09. – 25.09.2021 | 8:00 hMeeting point and Time: 8:00 KIT AGW (Institute for Applied Geosciences, Adenauerring 20a, 76131 Karlsruhe)Guide: Prof. Dr. Nico Goldscheider Max. number of participants: 18Price per participant: € 255Overnight stay 24.-25.09.21 at Hotel Gasthof Hirschen24.09.21: Wutachschlucht25.09.21: exploring the area of Donau-Aach The Wutach Gorge is part of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park and is under special protection. Its geologically young, prototypical and vividly ongoing formation produces a great variety of geo- and biotopes and enables a corresponding wealth of animal and plant species. The area between the Danube and the source of the river Aach is described in detail in terms of geology, hydrogeology, water quality and water management. Please note:• Please bring with you Terrain appropriate clothing & footwear, hammer, magnifying glass, water bottle (can become very hot); something to eat for day one.Field Trip 4: “Geology of the Kraichgau”1 Day -> 24.09.2021 | 10:00 – 16:00 hMeeting point: KIT AGW (Institute for Applied Geosciences, Adenauerring 20a, 76131 Karlsruhe)Guide: Dr. Benjamin Busch Max. number of participants: 25Price per participant: € 40 On this field trip we visit outcrops in the Kraichgau, east of the Rhine Graben. The sedimentological and structural geological conditions of the Kraichgau will be discussed. The spatial proximity to the Upper Rhine Graben offers the opportunity to view rocks, which are used as resources and reservoirs in the geological subsurface, in 3D in the outcrop. Supplemented by geophysical and petrophysical data, an analog for Triassic reservoir rocks in the area of the Upper Rhine will be developed. Please note:• Please bring with you Terrain appropriate clothing & footwear, water bottle (can become very hot); something to eat. Field Trip 5: “Geology around Pechelbronn, Rheingraben”1 Day: 25.09.2021 | 8:30 -18:00 hMeeting Point: Karlsruhe Main StationGuide: Dr. Carsten Reinhold Max. number of participants: 25Price per participant: € 40 “Merkwiller-Pechelbronn - from the birthplace of modern oil production to the geothermal and balynological use of hot thermal waters – a geohistorical journey”The village of Merkwiller-Pechelbronn on the French side of the Upper Rhine Graben is the birthplace of modern oil production in Europe. Oil seeps have been known since the 15th century. Oil sand mining started from the Pechelbronn oil field in the early 18th century, followed by the drilling of more than 5000 (!) wells, which produced more than 24 MMbbl of oil until the abandonment of the field in 1964. Pechelbronn is the “locus typicus” for the oil-bearing Pechelbronn-Formation, which is productive in the whole central and northern Upper Rhine GrabenWe will visit the site of the first modern oil well, the well site where the first wire logging operation was performed by the Schlumberger brothers as well as a natural oil seep. We will also have a look to the impact of mining, post-mining damages and attempts to use hot geothermal water for a spa and power generation. Please note:• Please bring with you Terrain appropriate clothing & footwear (weather-dependent); a water bottle (can become very hot); something to eat
